New 550+-Horsepower Infiniti Flagship Sedan in the Works

Just the Facts:
  • A new 550+-horsepower Infiniti flagship sedan is in the pipeline, confirmed Infiniti boss Johan de Nysschen in an open letter to Infiniti owners on Wednesday.
  • He said the new performance sedan will get a "potent charged induction V6."
  • The new Infiniti flagship sedan is expected to target the Jaguar XF.

FRANKLIN, Tennessee — A new 550+-horsepower Infiniti flagship sedan is in the pipeline, confirmed Infiniti boss Johan de Nysschen in an open letter to Infiniti owners on Wednesday.

He said the new performance sedan will get a "potent charged induction V6."

The sedan's announcement was part of a defense of Infiniti's new naming strategy, which was announced earlier this week. The Infiniti range will get either Q- or QX-prefixed models.

"We are embarking on a massive product offensive and these new cars need names," de Nysschen wrote.
He added: "Our new advanced technology engines under development will be smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient yet more powerful. And we will introduce some exhilarating performance machines in the future. I'm sure you will agree, it would be a bit odd to have a powerful, luxurious and refined V8-powered Infiniti M56, then position a new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range above it, using a potent charged induction V6, but then call it Infiniti M30, which we would be obliged to do, following our current naming logic."

Infiniti will also introduce "new models above and below the current lineup, and a wider range of powertrains," de Nysschen wrote.

The new Infiniti flagship sedan is expected to target the Jaguar XF. Infiniti has not released any other details about the sedan, including pricing and launch date.

Edmunds says: Infiniti couldn't help but give away some tantalizing future-product information as it defends its controversial naming strategy.
